The road to hell is paved with good intentions. (地獄への道は善意で舗装されました。, Jigoku e no michi wa zen'i de hosō saremashita) is the 43rd chapter of The Ancient Magus' Bride manga written by Kore Yamazaki.

Synopsis[]

Chise is left face to face with the memory of her mother, who openly declares and repeats her wish of having Chise dying. But as Chise knows that the one standing in front of her isn't her real mother, she goes on to speak her mind about her feelings for her mother but also those she has met up until this point. As the memory of her mother begs for forgiveness, Chise denies it but goes on to thank her instead, which prompts the image of Joseph to appear and ask for Chise to accept him. Revealing that Cartaphilus and Joseph are two separate individuals, Chise accepts the curse and she wakes up.

As she does, Chise takes Joseph by surprise and casts the same spell that he performed on her as to find out his intentions. The spell reveals Joseph's past as a gravekeeper and how he met Cartaphilus, the struggles he went through for wanting to help someone. Which reveals that after several attempts at trying to heal Cartaphilus, Joseph suggests that they become one and continue living from there.
